Donnie Darko: The Tangent Universe.

PU = Primary Universe (The Universe we exist in now)
TU = Tangent Universe (The parallel Universe that most of the film is set in)

Big bang theory.

laws of nature, everything is determined.
everything is a direct result of everything else that occurs.

things can be pre-determined.

knowing things will happen, is different from seeing into the future.

somethings gone wrong within the universe which is donnie darko, the character in the film.

Jet engine is the artifact to show the tangent universe has occured.

Donnie has one choice to make,  the universe has to make donnie make a choice. If donnie lives his life continiously then the cycle will always continue and no one can move on until he ends his life.

The workers are the blobs coming out of peoples chest and they direct people to what they have to do.

Frank is a person from the events caught up in all of this, so is forced to make donnie do the right thing.

Frank's eye injury is caused by donnie shooting him in the eye.

In the cinema Frank has an eye injury which is caused from events in the future that have not yet happened as he travelled back in time as he is caught up in the events.

Living dead will set a trap, which is when the characters go into Mrs.Sparrows house.

Living dead being the event happening on halloween. The costumes at the halloween party represent the living dead.

Ensurance trap which prompts donnie to do the right thing which is the death of the girl he loves.

Final chapter which is dreams allows everyone involved in donnie's life to see the future in a fractured way.

Analysis of front cover:

The film ‘Donnie Darko’ is a hybrid genres as it is a physciological thriller along with a sci-fi thriller. The reason it has connotations of a sci-fi thriller is due to the lighting and editing effects that take place. One example of this is when the main character Donnie Darko, is looking into the mirror, the effect used is that the illusion is created, that it is a porthole mirror that he can see someone from the future looking back at him. This creates great confusion to the viewer as something unnatural and unexplainable is taking place. This links into the idea of time travel taking place, which is where someone from the future comes back to the past, to give advice to someone from the past to change the events of what happens next to benefit there future.

The connotations of the thriller genre, are represented on the film case of Donnie Darko, as there is an image of the main character holding an axe. This object suggests death, intense pain, murder, violence etc. Which instantly has a negative effect on the viewer as they instantly guess that someone will be seriously injured or hurt during some stage of the film. The circle of life that is coming out of Donnie’s chest, that represents his soul being free and leading him to his next destination, is seen as a transparent mix of colours that are unnatural which represent the supernatural aspect of the film.

The film potrays great use of symbolism. One example of this is when the story of the rabbits is linked to as the story of what is happening within the film. The story of the rabbits adresses that they are hopeless, vunerable and unaware of there exsistance. Which is preety much how the characters are potrayed within the fim. Donnie makes a speach within the film which basically suggests without the rabbits the world would not be the same as it is now, they are an essential part of the food chain, without them everything would have to be carried out in a different way making serious change to the outcome of everything. This could suggest that reffering us as humans to rabbits is not such an obsurbed suggestion as if we were not alive or did not exsist in this world, then everything would not be the same. The world today as we know it, would not exsist.

BBFC: British Board of film classifiaction:

What is the BBFC?

The British Board of Film Classification is an independant non govermented organisation which has classified films since it was set up in 1912. Videos/DVDS have been reviewed and passed since 1984 when the video recording act was put into place.
The BBFC rates theatrically released films, and rated videos and video games to make sure they meet certain requirments. As well as stick to guidlines to keep to the given age restriction for that specific film.

Suitable for all.
It is impossible to predict what may or may not upset a particular child, due to the fact every child has different fears or phobias. However a 'U' certificated film should be suitable for children of over four years of age. These types of films should be set with a positive framework, and not atall have any scenes or resembalances to violence, threat or horror. There should be no referance to illegal drugs or drug usage along with only very mild bad language is acceptable. Natural nudity is acceptable, aslong as no sexual content is used. Mild sexual behaviour such as kissing, is acceptable aslong as thats as far as it goes.

Parental Guidance
General veiwing for all however, some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. Children of any age may watch unacompanied, as a 'PG' film should not disturb in any way a child of around eight or older. However parents are advised to check whether, they think the content of the film may upset or disturb younger or more senstive children. Discrimination language used is unlikely to be acceptable. Reference to illegal drugs must have a obvious anti-drug message, along with frightning scenes should not go on for to long of a period of time. Only mild bad language is acceptable, as well as only natural nudity. Moderate violence and more serious themed issues are acceptable.

Suitable for tweleve years and over.
Exactly the same criteria is used to classify the two above age restrictions '12' and '12A'. These categories are given when the film material is acceptable and suitable for those aged twelve years and over. Films classifed at these age may upset childern under 12 years of age or contain material that parents would think is unsuitable for them.

The '12A' category is only exsisted in cinemas. No one younger than 12 years of age may watch a '12A' at the cinema unless they are accompained by an adult. Although films classified as '12A' are not recomended for children below tweleve. However, an adult may take a younger child with them if in there judgment the film is suitable for their particular child. In some circumstances, the responsibilty of allowing a child under twelve years of age to watch a 12A lies with the accompanying adult.

Dangerous behaviour is allowed but should not dwell on. Moderate use of language is allowed. Moderate violence is acceptable but should not dwell on in detail. Nudity is allowed but sexual activity may be brief however, sex references should not go beyond what is suitable for young teenagers. Discriminatory language should not be used and usage of drugs should be descrete and not made a big deal of.

Suitable only  for fifteen years or over.
No one under the age of 15 should see a '15' rated film in the cinema. No one under fifteen may also rent or buy a '15' rated film.

Suitable only for adults.
No one under the age of '18' may see an '18' rated film in a cinema. No one under the age of eighteen may rent or buy a '18' rated film.

.
To be shown only in specially licensed cinemas, or supplied only in licensed sex shops, and sold to adults of not less than eighteen years of age.
The 'R18' category is specially designed and classified primarily for explicite use of sexual content or strong fetish material involving adults. Films may only be shown to adults in specially licensed cinemas, along with video footage may be supplied to adults in licensed and proffesional sex shops. 'R18' vidoes may not be supplied and sent through mail services.

Paramount Pictures:

Paramount Pictures is an American film production and distriubution company situated in Hollywood. It was founded in 1912 and was one of the very first national distributors. It is currently owned by media congomerate Viacom.

The founder of paramount pictures, Adolph Zucker found that movies in that period of time mainly appealed to working class immigrants. Zucker aimed to offer feature-length films that would appeal to the middle class by featuring well known leading theatrical player of that period of time. In 1912 the company was known as famous players studios.

Paramount Pictures is the producer and distributer of the thriller; Paranormal Activity which is so popular has three different sequels to the grip taking phsycological thriller.

Paramount pictures also prouduce and distribute films for children as they work with nickeloden movies to prouduce films such as The Last Airbender.

I think that paramount pictures would be a good distributor for our opening to a thriller as the company is well known and has a good reputation. As well as it has the right sources to advertise the thriller before it actually comes out, and as the company is nation wide therefore, there is acess to people all over the world.

Memento thriller opening annalysis:

The film memento is a physcological thriller. Along with it is also a mixture of hybrid genres as it has strong conventions of things you would expect to see in an action genre.
The lighting and effects used are not so typical, as normally subtitles in a thriller genre would be white on black, whereas in the case of memento they are blue on a black background. The colour blue could connote confussion, loneliness, or even sadness. The non digetic sound thats been added to the start of the film, is of a low pictched but very powerful unique build up of sound, that could suggest some kind of instrument being played as it builds from fairly quite to rapidly faster. This instantly has an effect on the audience, as the music is building up its almost as if the tension is building up with it. From this type of music an instant negative and bad vibe is predicted for the duration of the film. The digetic sound used within the film is of the main character Lennord's thoughts and feelings as he expresses his story to the reader through listening to a monolouge within his mind. Lennords story is told to the audience within the begining of the film as his use of going over words repeatedly, and forgetfull story telling shows the reader that he is very confused as to his condition that he finds himself stuck with. By the film using monolouge narative, through Lennords minds his thoughts, feelings and emotions are potrayed to the audience more effecitively as the reader feels as if they fully understand Lennords character and the big part he plays within the story. The effects used within the opening are connected to the first scene we encounter, which is the killing scene. As the film goes backwards in rewind of the events that happen the first thought the veiwer might encounter is of confussion. There is a close up of red blood dripping, red and blood both connote pain, hurt and upset which could suggest something bad has already happened or is going to happen. There is also a close up of the murder weapon, being the bullet, this builds tension within the audience as to whats happened, who's been shot and why?

Improved Media Prelim:

This is an improved version of our media prelim. In our old prelim we did not have any music to our video, by adding a mission impossible theme tune it adds that little bit more excitment to our prelim. Also towards the end of our prelim we had a continuity editing error that you could hear speach before the next shot started which therefore added great confusion for the viewer.

IMOVIE09:

iMOVIE09 software is on the computer macs that we use to edit our filming material. This software allows you to edit titles and clips. Along with add transitions and video effects. It also allows you to cut unwanted filming and clips and add still images/photos. It also enables you to add or detach sound effects/audio and to then finally turn your movie into a DVD.
