Memento thriller opening annalysis:

The film memento is a physcological thriller. Along with it is also a mixture of hybrid genres as it has strong conventions of things you would expect to see in an action genre.
The lighting and effects used are not so typical, as normally subtitles in a thriller genre would be white on black, whereas in the case of memento they are blue on a black background. The colour blue could connote confussion, loneliness, or even sadness. The non digetic sound thats been added to the start of the film, is of a low pictched but very powerful unique build up of sound, that could suggest some kind of instrument being played as it builds from fairly quite to rapidly faster. This instantly has an effect on the audience, as the music is building up its almost as if the tension is building up with it. From this type of music an instant negative and bad vibe is predicted for the duration of the film. The digetic sound used within the film is of the main character Lennord's thoughts and feelings as he expresses his story to the reader through listening to a monolouge within his mind. Lennords story is told to the audience within the begining of the film as his use of going over words repeatedly, and forgetfull story telling shows the reader that he is very confused as to his condition that he finds himself stuck with. By the film using monolouge narative, through Lennords minds his thoughts, feelings and emotions are potrayed to the audience more effecitively as the reader feels as if they fully understand Lennords character and the big part he plays within the story. The effects used within the opening are connected to the first scene we encounter, which is the killing scene. As the film goes backwards in rewind of the events that happen the first thought the veiwer might encounter is of confussion. There is a close up of red blood dripping, red and blood both connote pain, hurt and upset which could suggest something bad has already happened or is going to happen. There is also a close up of the murder weapon, being the bullet, this builds tension within the audience as to whats happened, who's been shot and why?
